Farmworker Immigration Bill Passes House, Moves on to Senate

Farmworker Immigration

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill on March 18, 2021, that would provide a pathway to citizenship for many undocumented immigrants currently living and working in the United States. The measure addresses the issue of farmworker immigration and provides a way to achieve legal status for these hard-working members of our labor pool. By reforming the agricultural visa program, the United States can ensure that these workers receive the protections they need to live and work safely in this country.

A Set of Measures Passed by the House

Along with the farmworker immigration bill, the House also passed legislation intended to provide added protections for immigrants already in this country. On the same day as the farmworker bill, the House passed a bill designed to create a pathway to citizenship for recipients of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). These individuals, better known as Dreamers, came to the United States during childhood or adolescence with parents or relatives. If the farmworker and the DACA bills are passed by the Senate, immigrants will enjoy added protections against deportation or detention by federal immigration agencies and will be able to build a more secure and stable life for themselves and their families. This will not only allow these individuals to enjoy a better quality of life but will also provide added fuel for the U.S. economy now and in the future.
