The First Steps for Biden’s Immigration Plan

Bidens immigration plan

As the first elements of President Joe Bidens immigration plan make their way through the U.S. House of Representatives, many immigrants are watching the process with cautious optimism. The arrival of thousands of new migrants at the Texas border, however, may slow the progress of this bill and could cast doubt on the feasibility of Bidens immigration plan among those responsible for its success or failure in the legislative branch of the government.

Dreamers, Asylum Seekers and Migrant Farm Workers

The measures currently under consideration by the U.S. House of Representatives primarily focus on providing pathways to legal permanent residency for some groups already in the United States:

  • Recipients of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), often referred to as Dreamers, would potentially receive both permanent legal residency status and a pathway to citizenship. For these individuals who were brought to the United States by their parents and without documentation, this could provide a measure of stability and confidence that they can remain in the only home many of them can remember.
  • Those who have been granted Temporary Protected Status after applying for asylum in the United States as a way of escaping the dangerous and unstable conditions in their home country could also receive added help in adjusting their status to permanent residency under Biden’s immigration plan.
  • Finally, farm workers who are responsible for harvesting and tending crops across the United States would also be offered a way to achieve legal status in the United States. These vital workers would then be afforded the benefits of legal residency and eventual citizenship in the country they serve so faithfully.

New Wave of Immigrants Could Create Obstacles

The influx of immigrants currently gathering at the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas could represent a significant stumbling block in bringing Biden’s immigration proposals to fruition. Republican opponents of Biden and of expanding and reforming immigration will likely see this as an opportunity to score political points and to prevent significant changes to the way in which immigration is addressed in this country.
