Refugees who were awarded temporary protected status in the United States after fleeing dangerous conditions in their home countries may soon lose these protections and be subject to immediate deportation after a ruling was handed down from the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. This ruling essentially strips away the legal immigration status of these individuals, many of whom arrived in this country years ago and have remained as conditions continued to worsen in their home countries.
Trump Pushes for End to Temporary Protected Status
Many of the immigrants who were allowed to remain in the United States under temporary protected status, or TPS, arrived here after natural disasters or economic collapse rendered their homelands unsafe or unstable. Immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and Sudan are among those who may be stripped of their right to remain in the United States if the ruling is allowed to stand.
No Immediate Effect on TPS Recipients
The Trump administration has agreed in principle to allow TPS recipients to remain in the United States legally until March 5, 2021. Those who arrived in this country from El Salvador have a longer period of safety. El Salvadorian TPS recipients can remain here legally until at least November 2021. For those who have made their new homes in the United States, however, the uncertainty of the new ruling could present real difficulties in managing housing, employment and education for children and teenagers who have been covered by TPS in the past.
