Four Major Changes to Immigration Under President Biden

NYC Immigrants

In his first few days in office, President Joe Biden has already had a significant impact on the lives of immigrants in New York and across the country. Through executive orders, President Biden has reshaped the landscape of immigration in this country. Here are four of the most important changes that NYC immigrants can expect to see this year.

No Deportations for 100 Days

President Biden has put a stop to nearly all deportations for at least 100 days to conduct a review of the policies and enforcement techniques of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This is great news for many NYC immigrants who may personally be dealing with deportation proceedings or may have family members who are currently facing this prospect. ICE will also be asked to change the priorities for its arrests to focus on those who have been convicted of violent crimes and those who are considered to be threats to the national security.

Reinstating and Protecting DACA

Recipients of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) protections will also be able to breathe easier under the Biden Administration. President Biden has issued an executive order that will provide added protections for DACA and will prevent ICE from making DACA recipients a priority target for deportation.

A Pathway to Citizenship for Undocumented Immigrants

President Biden has proposed a bill that would provide a pathway to citizenship for approximately 11 million undocumented immigrants who are currently living and working in the United States. The U.S. Citizenship Act bill is currently making its way to the legislative table and would allow NYC immigrants who clear a vetting process to apply for green cards and then for citizenship over an eight-year period.

Eliminating the Muslim Ban

The Biden administration has also issued an executive order overturning the ban on travel to the United States from 13 predominantly Muslim countries. For many individuals and families who are currently working with a New York immigration lawyer, this will come as good news that could allow families to reunite in the United States. By ending this discriminatory ban, President Biden has demonstrated his commitment to represent all Americans and their families.
