Biden’s New Immigration Bill Offers Hope to New York Immigrants

New Immigration Bill

President-elect Joe Biden has announced that he plans to introduce a new immigration bill as soon as he takes office later this month. This comes as good news to many immigrants who have been subjected to harsh and even cruel treatment under the outgoing Trump administration. Biden has pledged to overturn or reverse many of the policies put in place by President Trump during the last four years and to provide added help for immigrants in working toward legal permanent residency and eventual citizenship in the United States.

Expected Provisions of the New Immigration Bill

While the exact wording of Biden’s immigration bill is not yet known, it is expected to contain some or all of the following provisions:

The bill will almost certainly place a 100-day moratorium on all deportations, which will provide added help for families who are currently mired in the immigration system in New York and around the country.

  • The new immigration bill is expected to roll back some of the travel bans put in place by Trump. While the pandemic may justify some of these bans, the Biden administration will likely remove some of the restrictions on entry to the United States for immigrants and citizens alike.
  • President-elect Biden has also promised to end the current application of the Public Charge Rule, which has been used to deny visas to some applicants because they are deemed to be at risk of receiving food stamps, housing assistance or Medicaid if they enter the United States.
  • Dreamers have also received assurances that the Biden administration will reinstate and reinforce the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program to allow these young immigrants to pursue their educational and employment goals in the only home country some of them have ever known.
  • Employment and family-based visa programs will also return to normal levels, according to promises made by Biden and his administration. This will allow families to stay together or to reunite in the United States.
