ICE Delivers New York Immigration Subpoenas to City

New York Immigration Subpoenas

Have You Or Loved Ones Received New York Immigration Subpoenas?

A recent move by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will put added pressure on New York City and its status as a sanctuary city. ICE issued four subpoenas to the city seeking information about immigrants currently in custody and sought by the agency for deportation. The New York immigration subpoenas were targeted at four immigrants who were released by the city rather than turned over to ICE. One of the individuals in question has been accused of the rape and murder of Maria Fuertas, a resident of the borough of Queens. According to ICE, Reeaz Khan is a Guyanese man who was released on assault charges before he allegedly committed these acts. Khan was charged with murder on January 10, 2020 and remains in custody in New York.

A Hostile Environment for Immigrants

Despite the contention of ICE that it is only acting in the public interest and to protect U.S. citizens against criminal acts, the recent round of New York immigration subpoenas represents a definite change in approach by this government agency and the Trump administration. By targeting only immigrants with criminal histories for these recent New York immigration subpoenas, ICE has broken with its broader approach to detaining and deporting immigrants who have been charged with minor traffic offenses or who have committed no crimes at all.
