Alejandro Mayorkas Nominated as New Head of Homeland Security

Homeland Security

President-elect Joe Biden has nominated Alejandro N. Mayorkas as the head of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) under his administration. Mayorkas has previously served as a deputy secretary for the department, which has come under heavy fire under the Trump administration for appearing to bend to the will of President Trump. Mayorkas will be the first Latino and the first immigrant to serve in this capacity. He is expected to bring back stability and accountability to the DHS during his tenure in this position.

Born in Havana

Mayorkas was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1959 and arrived in the United States in 1960 when his family fled the country after the Cuban Revolution. They first settled in Miami, Florida, and later moved to Los Angeles, California, where Mayorkas attended Beverly Hills High School. Mayorkas received his law degree from Loyola Law School in 1985. After just three years in private practice, Mayorkas became an Assistant United States Attorney for the Central District of California. After extensive experience both in the private sector and as a U.S. Attorney, he was later named by President Obama as the head of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and was nominated to the position of Deputy Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security in June 2013.

An Inspiring Immigrant Story

Because Mayorkas has worked in some of the highest levels of the DHS and has also served as an attorney in the private sector, he is uniquely qualified to take on the challenges of his new role. For immigrants who have suffered through the past four years of the Trump administration, this is welcome news. In many cases, seeking the help and guidance of a qualified and experienced New York immigration attorney can provide added confidence for families trying to navigate the system now and in the future.
