Mayorkas was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1959 and arrived in the United States in 1960 when his family fled the country after the Cuban Revolution. After just three years in private practice, Mayorkas became an Assistant United States Attorney for the Central District of California. After extensive experience both in the private sector and as a U.S. Attorney, he was later named by President Obama as the head of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and was nominated to the position of Deputy Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security in June 2013.
