Governor Cuomo Boosts Services for Immigrants in New York

New York Immigration Services

On December 20, 2018, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that the state will be expanding the services offered to immigrants targeted for deportation by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal agencies. Governor Cuomo intends to add health care, rapid response to raids by ICE and social services to the legal support already available for immigrants and their families in the state of New York. This will help immigrants to deal with the challenges they face in the current political environment and can provide them with legal support when dealing with deportation proceedings brought by ICE against their families.

Support for Those Who Need It Most

This move by the state of New York will allow immigrants to access added help when they need it and will provide a good counterbalance to the aggressive activities of ICE. The Migration Policy Institute estimates that 940,000 undocumented immigrants live in the state of New York, with about 53,000 of those individuals under the age of 16. By providing these immigrants with added help, the state of New York continues its tradition of welcoming those who come to this country with the intention of making their permanent homes here.
