Asylum for Mexicans

Mexicans with family in the U.S. have recently been targeted by criminal elements in heartland regions such as Michoacan, Jalisco and Zacatecas. These poor regions are principal areas of people who have migrated to the U.S. Because of a spate of recent kidnappings, many Mexicans, some legal and some not, have pulled up stakes in Mexico and have fled to the U.S. Many of these emigrants justifiably believe that the government is unable to protect them. The government’s war against drug trafficking has aggravated this lawlessness. Many Mexicans who are in the U.S. have considered returning to Mexico due to the recession. There is little work for them in the U.S., but now they are reconsidering. In going back to Mexico many of these returnees would be considered by the criminal elements as wealthy candidates for extortion. This not unreasonable fear will induce many of these Mexicans in the U.S. to apply for political asylum because of their not unreasonable belief that the Mexican government cannot protect them.
