DRIVERS' LICENSES
Some
States have afforded expansive provisions allowing applicants
who do not have a Social Security number (SSN) to submit alternatives
such as a tax ID for a driver’s license, or have expanded
the list of documents that can be used by applicants to prove
their identity such as foreign passports or foreign identity
documents.
Some states have also considered creating a temporary driver’s
license for applicants who are not lawfully in the U.S.
Immigrants Driver's License
Eleven states currently allow immigrants to obtain a driver’s
license regardless of their immigration status, e.g., Maine
allows applicants without a Social Security Card to obtain
a driver’s license if the driver can show that he
is ineligible for a Social Security Card.
