For
aliens who entered the U.S. with or without visas and within
1 year after entry have applied for asylum, if they suffered
past persecution or have a well founded fear of future persecution,
an application for asylum is possible.
If an asylum application is successful, the applicant
and all of his/her immediate family may apply for adjustment
of status one year later.
Immigration
During the waiting period, permission to work
and to stay in the U.S. is granted. Asylum applicants may be
entitled to work and travel while awaiting permanent residence.
Formerly the quota availability exceeded 5 years but now the
waiting period has been considerably shortened.
